Multilingual and Culturally Sensitive Mental Healthcare: Why Your Own Language Matters
Why receiving therapy in your native language makes a difference, and how Mavera GGZ in Rotterdam offers culturally sensitive care in seven languages.
Room for recovery. Attention for who you are.
Welcome to Mavera GGZ
At Mavera we believe every person is unique. Behind every complaint lies a personal story.
That is why we look beyond symptoms alone. Together we explore what lies beneath the surface, creating space for recovery, insight and growth.
Everyone gets stuck in life sometimes. Anxiety, low mood, trauma, stress or relationship problems can make you feel like you are no longer yourself. At Mavera GGZ we believe every person has a unique story. That is why we listen to you first. Together we explore not only the complaints, but also what lies behind them.
Our story
Mavera literally means 'that which lies beyond the visible'.
For us, this name reflects the essence of our vision of mental health. Behind every complaint, emotion or request for help lies a unique person with their own story. Thoughts, feelings, memories and life experiences are often invisible to the outside world, yet they have a profound influence on how someone feels, thinks and functions.
That is why we look beyond the symptoms alone. We believe that lasting recovery begins with understanding the person as a whole and with attention to the underlying causes of psychological complaints. Mavera symbolises our conviction that recovery is more than reducing complaints. It is a process of rediscovering yourself, gaining new perspectives and building a life that is balanced and meaningful.
With personal attention, expert guidance and a safe environment, we support people not only in getting better, but also in moving forward stronger, more resilient and with greater confidence.
Every complaint has a story. We take the time to truly understand that story: not just the symptoms, but the person behind them.
We work with evidence-based treatment methods and offer them in your own language: Dutch, Turkish, English, Ukrainian, Polish, Uyghur and Arabic. This lowers the threshold and lets care fit who you are.
An average waiting time of 6 weeks to intake. Timely help can make all the difference. We strive to keep your wait as short as possible.
“Every person, regardless of background or language, has the right to quality mental health care in which the person, not the diagnosis, comes first.”

Our approach
A referral letter, preferably sent via Zorgdomein.
We aim to have a telephone pre-intake within two weeks.
Usually two conversations about your complaints and request for help.
A preliminary DSM-5 classification and treatment plan are drawn up.
If needed, an extended diagnostic assessment phase follows.
Starts with a regular therapist; evaluated together every three months.
Completed in mutual consultation; a closing letter is only sent with your consent.
What we treat
You do not need to have a formal diagnosis to come to us. If you are experiencing psychological complaints that are affecting your daily functioning, we would like to help you. Below is an overview of the complaints and disorders we treat.
Anxiety disorders can have a major impact on daily life. We treat generalised anxiety disorder, panic disorder, specific phobias, social anxiety disorder and other forms of anxiety. Using evidence-based methods such as CBT and EMDR, we work on reducing anxiety and improving your quality of life.
Depression is more than just feeling sad. It affects your energy, motivation, sleep and relationships. We offer individual therapy and, where necessary, medication, to help you find your way back to yourself.
Traumatic experiences can continue to affect you long after the event. With EMDR and trauma-focused CBT, we help process traumatic memories so that you can function better in daily life.
Personality disorders are persistent patterns of thinking, feeling and relating that cause problems. We have experience with borderline personality disorder, avoidant personality disorder and other personality pathology. Schema therapy is often central to this treatment.
Adults with ADHD often struggle with concentration, impulsiveness and organisation. We offer diagnostics and treatment, including psycho-education, coaching and medication management where needed.
Autism (ASD) can lead to challenges in communication, social interaction and sensory processing. We offer diagnostics and personalised support to help you understand and manage your autism.
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterised by intrusive thoughts and compulsive behaviours. With exposure and response prevention (ERP), a form of CBT, we help you break through this cycle.
Grief after loss, a breakup or another major life change can be profound. We offer support in processing grief and finding new meaning in life.
Treatment methods
CBT focuses on the relationship between thoughts, feelings and behaviour. Together we examine unhelpful thinking patterns and replace them with healthier alternatives.
More information →EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based treatment for trauma and PTSD. Disturbing memories are processed so that they no longer cause distress.
More information →ACT focuses on accepting difficult feelings and thoughts instead of fighting them, and on living according to your own values. This increases psychological flexibility.
More information →Schema therapy addresses deeply rooted patterns (schemas) that originate in childhood and cause persistent problems in adulthood. Suitable for complex issues and personality problems.
More information →Psychodynamic therapy explores unconscious processes and patterns from your past that influence your current functioning. This deepens self-understanding and promotes lasting change.
More information →This form of therapy focuses on improving communication and relationships within couples or families. We work together on healthier interaction patterns.
More information →In group therapy you work together with other clients on your recovery. Shared experiences, mutual recognition and support from the group are central elements.
More information →Online therapy offers the same quality of care as in-person sessions, but via video call. Ideal when attending in person is difficult due to distance, mobility or other reasons.
More information →Medication support for psychiatric complaints, supervised by a psychiatrist or doctor.

Frequently asked questions
Yes, to access mental health care (GGZ) in the Netherlands you need a referral from your GP (huisarts) or another medical specialist. Without a referral, we cannot accept your registration and your insurer will not reimburse the costs. Ask your GP for a referral letter and, if possible, have it sent via Zorgdomein. After we receive the referral letter, a telephone pre-intake follows within two weeks.
Our current waiting time for an intake appointment is approximately 6 weeks. After the intake, treatment usually starts within approximately 13 weeks. These times may vary. Contact us for the most current information.
Mavera GGZ is contracted with DSW and RMA/RMO, and has a payment agreement with Zilveren Kruis and VGZ. If you are insured with one of these insurers, your treatment is covered by your basic health insurance, subject to your compulsory excess (eigen risico). Are you insured elsewhere? Please contact us to discuss your options.
The compulsory excess (eigen risico) is the amount you pay yourself for healthcare before your insurer starts contributing. In 2026 the compulsory excess is €385. Mental health care is charged against this excess. Your insurer will inform you directly about any personal contribution.
Yes, Mavera GGZ offers online therapy via video call. This is subject to clinical assessment of suitability. Online therapy is offered via a secure, privacy-compliant connection. You also have access to the ZSG client portal for digital exercises and contact between sessions.
Our team speaks Dutch, Turkish, English, Ukrainian, Polish, Uyghur and Arabic. We can provide treatment in these languages, which means you can express yourself in your own language during therapy.
During the intake appointment, one of our psychologists will talk with you about your complaints, your history and your treatment goals. After the intake, you will receive a preliminary DSM-5 classification and a proposal for a treatment plan. Together we discuss this plan and agree on the next steps. The intake lasts approximately 60 minutes.
Please cancel your appointment at least 24 hours in advance, by phone (010 – 254 38 96) or by email (info@maveraggz.nl). If you do not cancel in time, we are required to charge a no-show fee of €50 (psychologist) or €100 (psychiatrist or when two clinicians are present). This fee is not covered by your health insurance.
The duration of treatment depends on your complaint, the severity and the treatment method used. We evaluate progress after approximately 3 months and discuss the next steps together. Some clients benefit from a brief, focused treatment of a few months, while others need longer-term support.
