Our Treatments

Pharmacotherapy

In some cases, medication can be a valuable addition to psychotherapy. Our psychiatrist can assess and prescribe medication where appropriate.

Treatment Overview

What is Pharmacotherapy?

Pharmacotherapy means the use of medication in the treatment of psychological complaints and psychiatric disorders. In mental health care, medication is usually used in combination with psychotherapy, not as a stand-alone treatment. The most commonly used types of medication are antidepressants, anti-anxiety medication, antipsychotics, mood stabilisers and ADHD medication. Medication is always prescribed by a qualified medical doctor, in our case by our psychiatrist. The decision to start medication is always made together with you, based on a careful assessment of the benefits and risks.

How does Pharmacotherapy work?

How does Pharmacotherapy work?

1

If medication is being considered, our psychiatrist will conduct a thorough assessment of your complaints, history, physical health and any existing medication.

2

The psychiatrist will discuss the options with you: which medication, why, expected effects and side effects, and the treatment plan.

3

After starting medication, regular follow-up appointments are scheduled to monitor effects and side effects and to adjust the dosage if necessary.

4

We always aim to use medication for the shortest necessary period and at the lowest effective dose, in accordance with clinical guidelines.
