What is ACT?
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a modern form of cognitive behavioural therapy that focuses on increasing psychological flexibility. Unlike traditional therapy, the aim of ACT is not to eliminate negative thoughts and feelings, but to change your relationship with them. By accepting what you cannot change and committing to what truly matters to you, you can live a richer and more fulfilling life, even when difficult experiences arise. ACT is evidence-based and effective for a wide range of complaints.
How does ACT work?
Acceptance: learning to make space for difficult thoughts, feelings and sensations instead of fighting them or avoiding them.
Defusion: distancing yourself from unhelpful thoughts, so that they have less hold over you.
Mindfulness: being present in the here and now, without judging your experience.
Values clarification: discovering what truly matters to you in life, what kind of person you want to be.
Committed action: taking steps in line with your values, even when this is difficult or uncomfortable.
Self as context: developing a stable sense of self that is not defined by your thoughts or feelings.
Who is ACT suitable for?
ACT is suitable for a wide range of psychological complaints, including anxiety, depression, PTSD, chronic pain and mood-related complaints.
It is particularly useful when avoidance behaviour or rigid thinking patterns are playing a significant role.
ACT is also suitable for people who want to work on personal growth and resilience, in addition to treating specific complaints.
