EMDR Therapy

EMDR is an evidence-based treatment for trauma and PTSD. At Mavera GGZ, experienced EMDR therapists help you process traumatic memories.

Achtergrond

What is EMDR?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. It is a scientifically validated treatment method, originally developed for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and trauma. During EMDR therapy, disturbing memories are reprocessed using bilateral stimulation (usually eye movements). This allows the memories to be stored differently in the brain, so that they no longer cause the same level of distress. EMDR is recommended in all major clinical guidelines for PTSD.

EMDR is opgenomen in de Nederlandse en internationale richtlijnen voor de behandeling van PTSS. Bij Mavera GGZ werken wij uitsluitend met gecertificeerde EMDR-therapeuten.

How does EMDR work?

1

First, we prepare carefully: we discuss what EMDR is, how it works and what you can expect. We ensure you feel safe and stable before starting.

2

You bring a specific disturbing memory to mind, including the associated emotions, thoughts and physical sensations.

3

While holding the memory in mind, you follow the therapist's hand or another form of bilateral stimulation (tapping, tones).

4

The memory is reprocessed. This usually happens relatively quickly. The emotional charge decreases and the memory becomes less intrusive.

5

After the session we evaluate how you are feeling and discuss any follow-up steps.

Who is EMDR suitable for?

  • EMDR is primarily indicated for PTSD and trauma-related complaints, including complex trauma.

  • It is also used for anxiety disorders, depression linked to traumatic experiences, grief and phobias.

  • EMDR is suitable for adults and, in an adapted form, for children and young people.
